What should you pack for a yoga retreat?

Everything's booked, the anticipation is high – but what should you actually pack? Many first-timers are unsure whether they're taking too much or too little. Here's our packing list for ultimate relaxation. First things first:

The yoga equipment

  • Bring your own yoga mat (only if one is not provided on site – it's best to check with the organizer beforehand)

  • Comfortable, stretchy clothing – several layers are ideal as body temperature changes during practice – and it is often practiced both outdoors and indoors.

  • A light blanket or a large towel for the final relaxation (Savasana) – often needed, especially in air-conditioned or cooler rooms.

  • A small cushion or bolster if you like to sit or lie down with support – many retreats also provide these.

For outdoor use

  • Weatherproof clothing if outdoor sessions are planned.

  • Sun protection – sunscreen, hat, possibly sunglasses

  • Comfortable shoes for walks or hikes in the surrounding area

For the time in between

  • A book or diary – many use the quiet phases of a retreat to reflect or simply to read in peace again.

  • Reusable water bottle – staying hydrated is especially important during practice.

  • Comfortable leisurewear for when you're not in yoga class.

What you should (consciously) leave at home

  • Too much technology. A retreat is a good opportunity to put your phone aside more often. If you want, you can leave it at home altogether or consciously only take it with you for emergencies.

  • Too much planning on your mind. Retreats thrive on slowing down – don't plan to do any work "on the side".

A special tip for mother-daughter or family retreats

If you're traveling with your mom (or another family member), it can be nice to pack something personal that connects you both – an old photo, a little evening ritual, or simply a favorite drink to share upon arrival. Small gestures like these make your time together even more meaningful.
